When Is Radiation Therapy Used?

More often, however, radiation sessions are coupled with a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or hormone therapy.

What Are the Side Effects of Radiotherapy?

Since radiation therapy is a localized treatment, many patients experience no side effects. However, some patients do experience mild discomfort like fatigue, nausea, and skin problems (e.g. itching, burning, blistering). Other side effects depend on the area being treated. Radiation to the brain, for instance, can cause hearing loss and cognition problems.

SERO’s providers at Atrium Health – Levine Cancer Institute – Union Radiation Therapy Center want to make your radiation treatment as painless as possible. With this in mind, they always discuss possible side effects with patients before beginning treatment. They also check in with patients weekly to monitor side effects and, in some cases, to adjust radiation dosages.
